Low-Cost Attractions in London 

Everybody loves a holiday, whether it’s a weekend getaway or several weeks on an extended break, it’s the highlight of the year. But let’s be honest, we are all familiar with the feeling that we spend a little bit too much money whilst away, resulting in us having to save even harder for our next trip.  

But you don’t always have to feel that way post-holiday. There are ways to still have a jampacked holiday without watching your wallet. So, for those on a budget or students trying not to splash the cash whilst abroad, read on! We’ve created the ultimate guide to a wallet friendly holiday, detailing our favourite low cost and free attractions in our favourite European cities – starting first in the UK capital, London.

Play cathedral bingo! 

Or at least, bingo in what feels like a cathedral!  And a pretty spectacular one at that! Dab away at your card while sitting amongst gothic arches, oil paintings and beautiful wood carvings. Located in Tooting, we cannot think of a more splendid place to test our luck at bingo than a grade I listed building.  

Visit the Tate Modern 

One of the most popular galleries in the UK, the Tate Modern is a must-see location for any art lover visiting the capital. From Monet to Tracey Emin, the Tate Modern hosts art from the old masters to contemporary artists – meaning there is something for everyone, whatever your taste! And with free admission, even if you’re not an art lover, this space will still intrigue you. It’s not all about the art, the Tate Modern restaurants come highly recommended. Not only can you find spectacular dishes, but also fantastic views of the city!  

Watch a royal ceremony 

Did you know that you can watch a royal ceremony that has been occurring for over 700 years without spending a penny? Head over to the Tower of London and watch the Ceremony of the Keys and witness Yeomen Warders swap keys and close the Tower for the night. Its completely free to watch this historical ceremony, just make sure you pre-book your place online!  

Explore the Barbican gardens 

Not only does this Brutalist empire have architecture worth exploring, but there is also a gorgeous fern-filled conservatory. It is a fabulous place for taking some time to relax and unwind after a fun-filled day of sight-seeing!  Admission is free on Sundays, making it an excellent location for holidaying on a budget and the conservatory offers the perfect backdrop for some holiday pictures! 

Window shop at Harrods 

Located at 87-135 Brompton Rd, Harrods is London’s most famous shopping emporium and an institution in its own right. This is where the wealthy of London get their groceries and everything else in between. It’s a particularly magical place at Christmas but worth visiting at any time of the year. With around one million square feet of shopping space, Harrods is open Mon-Sat: 10 am-9 pm and Sun- 11.30 am-6 pm. 

Enjoy a free gig 

Famous for its music scene, London is the ideal place for any music lover! If you are a fan of live music, you have to check out Rough Trade East, the record company’s flagship UK store near Brick Lane as they regularly host live gigs that won’t cost you a penny! Who knows maybe you will discover the next big thing!  

Go to the Globe  

What was once the home to Shakespeare’s plays, the Globe is a must-see for anyone visiting London. From just £5 you can discover the rich cultural history of the theatre that was first opened in 1599. We cannot think of a better location to watch a live performance than the Globe theatre. To bag one of the cheaper stall tickets, make sure you book in advance. Just remember to bring a jacket as the Globe is an open-air theatre. 

Visit a Market 

London has some pretty spectacular markets. Whether you are on the hunt for some vintage finds at Camden Market or want to explore the foods of the city at Borough Market, there’s plenty to see. Just ensure you have plenty of time to wander around the various stalls and soak up the atmosphere. Both are completely free to visit, and there are plenty of free samples at Borough Market making it the ideal place to get lost and experience the cultures of London. 

Explore the Science Museum 

Check out life-size steam trains to seven-toed cats at the Science Museum on Exhibition Road. Open daily from 10 am to 6 pm; this fascinating exhibition room is a great way to spend a couple of hours any afternoon.  

Fly fighter jets 

Have you ever wanted to fly a fighter jet? For just £5 you can experience what it is like to be a fighter pilot at the Typhoon Force simulator at the Science and Technology Museum. Watch out for the 40,000 feet descent, especially if you’ve just had lunch.  

Walk in Hyde Park 

What was once the site of the 1851 Great Exhibition and the hunting ground of kings, Hyde Park plays host to the Serpentine River. It’s also where Princess Diana’s memorial is located. We hope you have your walking boots on, as Hyde Park is one of the capitals longest parks. Located in Central London near Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park is the ideal place to wander and take in the sights of London life.
